1. SPST and SPDT – The Simple Basics

Let’s kick things off with the most common rocker switch models. You’ll often see SPST (single-pole, single-throw) and SPDT (single-pole, double-throw) designs everywhere.

An SPST rocker switch works like a basic on-off button. Flip it one way, the circuit closes. Flip it back, it opens. That’s it. Perfect for lights or simple power controls.

On the other hand, an SPDT rocker switch gives you more options. It connects one input to either of two outputs. For example, you might use it to switch between two different power sources. Both models are reliable, easy to wire, and budget-friendly. So if you need straightforward switching, start here.

2. Momentary vs. Latching – Know the Difference

Another thing you’ll notice when browsing a rocker switch model guide is the action type: momentary or latching.

A latching rocker switch stays where you put it. Press one side, it locks on. Press the other, it locks off. Think of a desk lamp or a power strip.

A momentary rocker switch springs back to its original position after you release it. You see these in car window controls or motor start circuits. Neither type is better than the other — it just depends on what your device needs.

So ask yourself: do you want the switch to stay in place, or only work while you hold it? That choice leads you to the right model.

3. Illuminated and Sealed Options for Tough Jobs

Now let’s talk about two very practical rocker switch models: illuminated and sealed.

An illuminated rocker switch has a small built-in light. The light turns on when you activate the switch. This helps operators see the switch status in dim equipment panels, boats, or medical devices. Some use LED lamps, which last a long time and barely draw power.

A sealed rocker switch carries an IP rating like IP65 or IP67. That means it resists dust and water jets. You’ll find these on marine equipment, outdoor power tools, and food processing machines. They keep working even in rain, washdowns, or high humidity.

For harsh environments, a sealed illuminated rocker switch gives you the best of both worlds.

4. Matching Size and Rating to Your Application

Finally, don’t overlook the physical and electrical specs. A good rocker switch model guide always includes panel cutout size and current/voltage rating.

Most standard rocker switches fit a cutout around 19mm x 13mm or 22mm x 30mm. Check your panel before buying.

Also, look at the rating — for example, 10A at 125VAC or 16A at 250VAC. Choose a switch that handles more than your actual load. That way, you avoid overheating or contact failure.

From tiny 3A switches for PCBs to heavy-duty 20A models for industrial gear, there’s a rocker switch model for nearly every job.
